Week 6 Anatomy and Physiology of - Musculoskeletal System

Objective

To provide students with detailed knowledge of the structures and functions of the musculoskeletal system, enabling them to understand its role in movement, posture, and protection, as well as common disorders encountered in clinical practice.

Day 1 - Introduction to the Musculoskeletal System

  • Topics Covered:

    • Overview of musculoskeletal system functions

    • Relationship between skeletal and muscular systems

    • Roles in support, movement, protection, mineral storage, and blood cell formation

  • Activities:

    • Lecture with diagrams

    • Group brainstorming: daily activities requiring the musculoskeletal system

    • Matching exercise: function to body part

Day 2 - Skeletal System Anatomy

  • Topics Covered:

    • Classification of bones: long, short, flat, irregular

    • Major bones of the axial skeleton: skull, vertebral column, rib cage

    • Major bones of the appendicular skeleton: limbs, shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle

    • Bone structure: compact vs. spongy bone, bone marrow

  • Activities:

    • Bone model labeling

    • Worksheet: skeletal system diagram

    • Mini quiz on major bones

Day 3 - Joints & Movement

  • Topics Covered:

    • Classification of joints: fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial

    • Types of synovial joints and their movements

    • Examples of each type in the body

  • Activities:

    • Joint model demonstration

    • Case discussion: common joint injuries

    • Matching activity: joint type to example

Day 4 - Muscular System Anatomy

  • Topics Covered:

    • Types of muscle tissue: skeletal, cardiac, smooth

    • Major skeletal muscles and their functions

    • Muscle fiber structure and contraction process

  • Activities:

    • Diagram labeling: major muscle groups

    • Group activity: naming exercises for muscles

    • Short quiz on muscle types and functions

Day 5 - Disorders & Clinical Relevance

  • Topics Covered:

    • Common musculoskeletal disorders: fractures, osteoporosis, arthritis, muscular dystrophy, sprains/strains - Diagnostic methods: X-ray, MRI, CT scan

    • Prevention and rehabilitation

  • Activities:

    • Case study discussions on fractures and arthritis

    • Role-play: explaining a care plan to a patient

    • End-of-week review quiz

Assessment & Homework

  • Assessment:

    • End-of-week quiz (20-25 questions - multiple choice, labeling, short answer)

  • Homework:

    • Read musculoskeletal system chapter in A&P textbook

    • Complete skeletal and muscular labeling worksheets

    • Write a brief report on one musculoskeletal disorder and its prevention
