Week 9: Basic Clinical Procedures I
Lecture Overview
In this session, students will learn and practice the fundamentals of basic clinical procedures. The focus will be on accurate measurement and documentation of vital signs, patient intake process, and skill validation. Students will also engage in simulation exercises.
1. Demonstrate and Practice Vital Signs
Temperature (oral, tympanic, temporal, axillary)
Blood Pressure (manual and automated)
Heart Rate (radial, apical)
Respiratory Rate (observation and palpation)
Each student will observe demonstrations, then perform under instructor supervision.
2. Clinical Documentation of Findings
Students will document findings in a clinical chart using SOAP format:
S - Subjective (patient statements)
O - Objective (measured vitals)
A - Assessment (interpretation of findings)
P - Plan (recommended next steps)
Accuracy, legibility, and correct terminology are emphasized.
3. Patient Intake Simulation
Students will role-play as both medical assistant and patient to simulate:
Greeting the patient and verifying identity
Collecting chief complaint and medical history
Measuring and recording vital signs
Preparing the patient for examination
